Planning a Birthday Party for your One Year Old
One of the joys of being a parent is to be able to organize your child's special milestones like his/her birthdays. However, what do you do when your child is only a year old? It is not like he or she will remember what flavor the cake was on the first birthday. Neither will the child remember who were invited, or who did not show up. Therefore, is it rational to just not celebrate your baby's first birthday? After all it can save a whole lot of money, which will probably be more useful in buying more baby diapers or baby food!
Ask parents about what they think, and most of them will scorn at the idea of skipping the celebration of their little one's first birthday. They will tell you what outfit they bought for their child, what gifts were given by the guests and what food was served at the party.
Have a costume party
It doesn't matter if your child won't remember what his or her first birthday was like. Lucky for us, we live in the age of technology which can allow us to record the whole thing and save it for them to watch it when they are old enough to be embarrassed by it. Having a costume party is a great idea for a one year old's birthday party. Dress up as fruits, vegetables, or even cartoon characters that they are familiar with.
If you think that a one year old is incapable of recognizing such things, you are mistaken. Most toddlers know their apples from peas by the time they are one. They may not be able to pronounce it, but they sure know how either of them tastes like, and they can spot the difference.
What about the food?
It's not like a one year old can enjoy sugary slices of creamy chocolate cake for their one year old birthday party. But that shouldn't stop you from ordering one. You can even customize it to look like his or her favorite cartoon. After all, they can see what it was like in photographs and videos once they grow older.
If you don't want to leave out your child completely from participating in the gastronomic pleasures of the event, allow him or her to have chocolate flavored baby food. In fact, you can allow them to take a bite from the actual cake itself.
When and where should you plan it?
Since it is a one year old child we are talking about, it is best to arrange the birthday at your own house. This is mainly to avoid any potential disasters and keep things convenient and under control on the day of the event. Toddlers can be a handful and you would not want to worry about them on their birthday.
Try to make the time such that your child stays awake during the party. It would be a shame if your one year old fell off to sleep on his or her own one year old birthday party.
Who to invite?
You should invite your one year old's friends from daycare or crèches. However, you don't want to look after a bunch of one year olds running amuck inside your house while you are trying to host a birthday party for your own child. Therefore, the best thing to do is to invite the parents of the children as well.
Grandparents of course should make the guest list. After all, if there is any other person who dotes on your child more than you do, it is the grandparent.
