It can be a lot of fun to put together a Hawaiian party. In this article we’re going to cover several points that will get you launched in the right direction for a Hawaiian party that will be fun, engaging and memorable.
But first things first. Did you know that in Hawaii they call what we would traditionally call a ‘knees up’, a luau? It’s basically a party that involves a lot of food. They may occur for occasions such as weddings, birthdays, engagements, graduations or any other kind of occasion when you might like to celebrate.
Now that you know what a luau is, let’s move onto one of the most important aspects, food.
Hawaiians traditionally serve a roast pig that has been cooked whilst it’s buried in the ground at their parties. It will take around 18 hours too cook and less than an hour to eat (depending on how good it is). This is an option that you could do too. If you feel that way inclined, otherwise you could take your pick from the list of foods below that will be easier and more convenient to serve than burying a cooking pig.
Although traditionally the Hawaiians liked to serve mashed fruits with raw fish at their Hawaiian party events, you can make yours a lot more convenient by serving the following:
· Diced tropical fruits such as pineapples, bananas, papayas, watermelon and mangoes
· A pineapple upside down cake.
· If you’re holding a barbecue, then you might want to put some bananas on that grill, still wearing their skins. You can slit holes into the skin, insert some pieces of chocolate, wrap in foil and hey ho – you’ve got a delicious dessert to serve with ice cream.
· At previous parties, we’ve served roasted pig rolls served with mango-pineapple salsa and fruity grilled shrimp kebabs and it’s gone down a treat.
Hawaiian Party Game Ideas
It wouldn’t be a Hawaiian party without the hula hoop and a few limbo contests thrown in for good measure. You might want to consider holding a bowling tournament using coconuts as the balls and pineapples as the pins. Another great game is toss the sea shell.
Whatever food and party games you decide to include in your party, be sure to remember to give everybody a flower necklace on their arrival, to get them in the mood.
