Having the right clothes, make-up and hair is of course essential when attempting to pull off a particular fancy dress costume. But sometimes it can take a little something extra to really capture the essence of the character you’re trying to emulate, particularly when it comes to fancy dress costumes for a Hollywood party. This week we take a look at the top five movie props from across the decade, all of which are an integral part of the character’s costume.
Facehugger (Alien) – An all time classic film prop, made famous after attaching itself to John Hurt’s face in order to impregnate him with an extraterrestrial killing machine. Oldest trick in the book.
Light Saber (Star Wars)- Surely few grown men can honestly say that they’ve never had a secret desire to wield Luke Skywalker’s weapon of choice whilst making ‘fving, fving’ sound effects? An absolutely essential prop for any Jedi fancy dress costume.
The One Ring (Lord of the Rings) – There may well have been only one ring to rule them all originally, but since the success of the Lord of the Rings movies, sales of ‘the one ring’ have skyrocketed. If you’re intending on donning hobbit fancy dress at any point make sure that you get one. Just don’t let the Dark Lord Sauron get his hands on it.
Toto (Wizard of Oz) – The dog that starred in The Wizard of Oz was a Cairn terrier, but for fancy dress purposes a cuddly toy dog of any small and yippee variety should do the trick. Toy dogs have the added benefit of being exceptionally well toilet trained, and are far less bothersome to the legs of other party guests.
Tommy Gun (Scarface )- The moment when Al Pacino reveals a not so little machine gun with the line, “say hello to my little friend!” is guaranteed to be played out at least ten times over the course of any gangster themed fancy dress party. Always works much better if you’re holding a ridiculously large replica gun.
